Originating from the states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, known as the ‘Mother Of All Martial Arts’, this 3,000-year old art form originating from Kerala, draws inspiration from the raw power, swift movements and sinuous strength of animals – the lion, tiger, elephant, wild boar, snake and crocodile. The term ‘Kalari’ refers to the place where this combat style is taught, while ‘Payattu’ means to practise.
Ancient Buddhist monks travelling from India to China are said to have taught these martial arts to the Chinese. The Indian Buddhist monk and founder of Zen Buddhism, Bodhi Dharma, is named Chan in China, andwas the Kalarippayattu master who is believed to have transmitted the majestic combat form to China.
Many movements and postures in Kalaripayattu, inspired by the raw strength and majesty of animals, are also named after them. The art is believed to have been developed in forests, in which hunters had carefully observed and emulated the fighting techniques of different animals.
